Abbas KIAROSTAMI (1940, Iran – 2016, France) was trained as a painter at the University of Tehran.

He made dozens of commercials before joining the staff of Kanun (Center for Intellectual Development of Children and Adolescents), where he set up the Film Department.

Today I watched a very interesting documentary film by Abbas Kiarostami named “Homework.” It was created in 1989 starring young boys of a primary school in Iran who discuss with Kiarostami about their parents, teachers, punishment, reward and homework.

Moreover, two fathers give their opinion about homework and teaching practice in Iran.

With Taste of Cherry (1997) he won the Golden Palm, with The Wind Will Carry Us (1997) the Silver Lion.

Like Someone In Love (2012) is his last completed feature film.

In essence, this documentary shows the weaknesses and scars of the Iranian educational system.

We see that the young students reveal the more personal dark aspects of their life such as domestic violence and poverty.

They accidentally betray who punishes them, the objects used in the beating, and its frequency.

What really surprised me are the facts that many of them didn’t know what the words “praise” and “reward” mean and when the director asked them what punishment is, all pupils replied that it means being beaten up.
